FROM THE ORAL TRADITION TO THE PRINTED PAGE
“a First Nations-based approach to the teaching of writing”
Richard's innovative workshop process offers a powerful new approach to the teaching of writing. It's unique in that it begins with oral story. Students are introduced to their authentic voice or “the inner storyteller.” They are guided to the spontaneous and free flowing use of language that all human beings used as children. Specific exercises return them to the ability to tell stories with a total lack of fear and judgment. They are directed to spontaneous oral stories of seven to ten minutes and learn empowering techniques that drive their creative process. They learn to tell in complete spontaneous sentences and paragraphs without notes. They learn to fashion narrative arcs on the spot and tell whole stories aloud and ‘off the cuff.”
They are then shown how to take this new and compelling skill to the act of writing. Through specific exercises that link spontaneous oral storytelling to the printed page they discover the amazing “whole brain” approach to creating narrative that First Nations storyteller have been using for generations. They learn to work with the five traditional oral storytelling principles. They harness those principles with two definitive rules of writing that allow them to create on paper as freely as they do aloud.
Along with these specific skills, this program is further unique in that it uses traditional First Nations ceremony, ritual and teachings to build an emotional, spiritual, physical and intellectual union with the process of writing. This ‘medicine circle” approach allows them to foster trust in “The Channel” that each of us have as carriers of language.
From The Oral Tradition to the Printed page is an uplifting and empowering experience that offers students the proven success formula of Richard Wagamese, a prolific and award-winning author who has published 13 titles with major Canadian publishers in 21 years.
This program has been taught successfully as a full credit course at the University of Northern British Columbia since 2011. Now you can get the benefit of that proven program in one weekend! And you get to work closely with one of Canada's foremost novelists and writers.
The program uses a participatory teaching approach (Richard works and creates along with the students) which emphasizes a variety of experiential techniques based on First Nations oral storytelling combined with contemporary writing practices. The majority of class time is devoted to the practice of craft with the initial assignments done orally in class. Writing assignments will require demonstration of skill building techniques along with completed stories. Participation makes up a significant portion of the final grade.
By the end of the program students will be able to:
- create spontaneous oral stories from word cues
- generate spontaneous narrative ideas as building blocks for story
- tell spontaneous oral stories in structured sentences and paragraphs for extended periods
- build effective story maps in preparation for writing
- create compelling characters, scenes, dialogue, descriptions both orally and in writing
- write free flowing prose for extended periods
- provide sound, empowering feedback to peers
- use ceremony and ritual to access their own creative channel at will
- use these techniques in other forms of writing
“Attending Richard’s Writer’s Retreat has been one of the most powerful experiences of my life. The writer’s retreat was a course about writing that I have never experienced in all my years of university writing courses. I used to write set plots and characters but through Richard’s guidance I was able to open a channel which allowed me to unleash truly original ideas. Richard facilitated a sacred process which I will always carry with me and the whole experience I know will make me a better writer.”

“Going to the writers' retreat with Richard was the best thing I had done for my creativity and writing for a very long time. The opportunity to free my mind and challenge myself to new perspectives, ideas and processes was priceless. The sheer pleasure of spending five days doing nothing but writing and story-telling with two wonderful writers by my side is going to be very hard to beat! It was an exhausting, liberating, exhilarating and joyous literary adventure that I would do all over again in a heartbeat.”

“The writer's retreat was a paradigm-shifter; it took everything I thought I knew about writing and turned it on its head. Richard transformed my process from a painful extraction of slow words emerging onto a blank page into a pure creative torrent of fully-formed storytelling. I arrived at the retreat as a chrysalis of tightly wound creative energy, and departed as a butterfly in full poetic flight.
"Whether you are new to writing, or well-entrenched in your own creative process, Richard will re-chart the channel to the core of your creativity and allow you to spin stories out of seemingly thin air. He will teach you to astound yourself with your ability to witness the tales hidden within every thing and release them onto the page. The metamorphosis you will experience is invaluable, and will alter your perception of your self forever.”

“The Writer’s Retreat was easily the most innovative workshop I have ever been to. There were many instances that felt very surreal, where I would take a step back in my mind and think to myself, “wow – am I really here, doing this?!” The activities were designed to get us writing “without thinking” and I was surprised at the creativity and stories that were within me. I know that this experience will improve the way that I teach Indigenous literature and writing to both my high school and college-prep students.”
